Dug this today at a house site on a main road where CW battles were fought. Also found a wormed bullet,a nice little brass rivet, and a Confederate flat button back marked " plated". Looked like I could see some gold flecks under the crud. So what is this little doohickey? It's brass and is "grooved" on the bottom. It's about 1 and 1/2 inches long at best.

Looks like part of a clasp that was attached to a strap at one time. Are those the remains of three rivets I see?

Please give our fellow What-Is-It? forum ID-helper BuckleBoy credit as the original poster of the following information, and photos. Your find is the strap-tip from a mid-1800s valise. See the photos below. Note that only the longest strap has a metal (brass) strap-tip.

Between you and Buckleboy I knew one of you would come up with the answer! Thoughti was going to have to spend another sleepless night wondering.

I take Advil PM. Just one will give me a great sleep. Two and I end up sleeping in.
