I found something that belonged to my grandfather, but what is it?

I live in my grandparent's old home and found this today abot 1 1/2 to two inches down in the front yard. It has the initials "LMP" inscribed on it, which were my grandfather's initials. He passed in 2001 at the age of 81.

I don't have a clue of what it is. It seems to be made of brass. The first picture shows how it was dug. The second picture shows the hooked whazzit that was inside.

Looks like some sort of fish scale

Definatly not a fish scale - as long as I knew him he never fished. I agree that it was connected to keys or a chain of some sort, but still what is it? It seems more to me than just a key tag.

My guess would be an old 1960's-era ID bracelet that's missing the wrist chain. In your second photo, the item at the bottom is the clasp (missing the wrist chain) that slid into the hollow monogrammed shield part of the bracelet.

It's neat that you found something of your grandfather's.

Yeah, I see what you are saying. That sounds like what it is.

This is the first item that I've found on the property that I can connect directly to a family member (it has been in the family for 100 years).
