We like to find at least 1 New Roman Site a year & today I sniffed out our 3rd.
This farm is our furthest away & it was a risk travelling so far without knowing any of the states of the fields, but it worked out OK. We did 7 hours today & stayed pretty mobile, so the breakdown went like this;
3 hours on a Roman/Saxon Site hoping to see a rare sceat, but we only managed 10 small scrappies, a sign that we have hammered this site. I did however get a Penny of Lizzy on my last run.
After lunch we moved to a nearby Roman Site & spent 1 hour 45 minutes but only ended up with 3 scrappies & we noticed that someone had beat us to it. We are unsure who this competition is, first time its happen on this field, although it was very choppy, so we may return in better conditions.
Lastly, we tried a field that has only produced a very small selection of finds but one I felt should do better. Its a massive field & I started with a huge sweeping arch scanning for signs. There were very few, but then I hit (by luck) a Roman Steel-yard Weight. I stopped to GPS it & called Cru'Dad over to start gridding as it was the best sign so far, as he got to about 20 feet away he hit a scrappy, the game was on. After my usual tactic of breaking left & Cru'Dad breaking right we found signs that it was mapping right & after 2 hours 15 minutes we had 10 coins. As this field was drilled with wheat we will return next year to get the the bottom of it.
