I found a 10k class ring on campus Thursday and posted it in “Glad I went out today, first gold of 2020”. I called the school on Friday and asked if they could help find the owner. They offered to post the find on their Facebook page with my phone number, but they don’t have an alumni group or any other way to help. I agreed and then I managed to find the 1971 yearbook on line and so I found the young lady’s name.
Saturday I went to Virginia to see my granddaughter’s play. While I was there Visiting I got 2 calls about the ring. An acquaintance from scouts called to say there was no one in the yearbook with the initials in the post. I corrected the error and he said he would pass the info on. Later I got a call from a gentleman who asked if the initials might be wrong in the post and suggested a different order for the initials. His order was correct, the school had mixed up the order of the initials in their post(probably a typo) switching the middle and last initials. His wife’s maiden name was the one I had found in the yearbook so we arranged to meet Sunday afternoon. He said his wife was thrilled that I had found the ring and that it had been lost for almost 50 years.
We actually met at the field where I found the ring. She lost it during a golf class in her first semester of college in the fall of 1971 so the ring has been in the ground a little over 48 years. She wasn’t the one who lost the ring. She had let a boy wear the ring on his pinky finger and it fell of while they were golfing. They looked and looked but couldn’t find it. Needless to say she was really angry at the time.
She told me that there were no sports fields or track back them. The field I found the ring on is sloped toward the sides and has large drain grates in several places. The field has had some major work done on it which makes the ring find less likely, so luck was with me. Also the scout friend had made contact with the owners and let them know about the Facebook post.
As you can see she was thrilled and surprised to get her ring back after all this time. Her husband was almost as happy about it as she was. The picture was taken while she was standing on the spot where I found the ring. They have given me permission to detect their yard whenever I want. Their home was built in 1910 so that sounds promising.
(sorry, but no matter what I do the picture comes out sideways)
Class ring return number 14 has been the fastest class ring return for me. If I had not been out of town Saturday it would have been even faster. I still have 3 class rings with promising leads to follow so maybe I will be able to post another return soon.
Thanks for looking and may your coil lead you to good things.
P.S. A2, Thanks for the good luck wishes on my last post, they paid off. Way to go Tommy.
