Metal Detecting
Hello everyone! I have been in the market for a new metal detector for a while now. The ACE 250 is a wonderful machine, but the big dogs go deeper, and in turn get more targets. I metal detect all the time so I needed a good, deep machine. I had been looking at the AT Pro, and the AT Gold. I decided today that I would go with the AT Gold, because of the high frequency and relic finding capability. I hate spending money, but I believed this would be a high yield investment in the longrun. I was using my backup machine, a compadre, until my ACE was returned from warranty repairs. I couldn't go another day with the Tesoro. It is a very shallow machine, and I do not have any "easy" sites. When I got off work, I broke open the wallet and bought the only AT Gold in stock. I am so relieved to have a good detector finally.

The first site I tried it out at was very grown up and it was hard to swing, but I can honestly say that the first non ferrous that I dug with it was a colonial tombac or pewter button! What a great way to start out a voyage with a new detector! I left shortly after that because the sun was setting and I wanted to play a little, so I went to a field that has given me some good colonial targets in the past. I had deemed both sites hunted out with the ace 250, but again managed to pull another two targets from the field. First was an 1840s pewter cast spoon handle, marked C PARKER & Co. Then I dug a Complete minus sprag shoe buckle or knee buckle! I am very happy with my new detector, and am excited to learn how to use it. I dug a BUNCH of nails, so I am going to have to do some studying with the iron discrimination on the unit. Thanks for looking at my post! Enjoy the pictures, video coming!

In the store I was told the detector ATGOLD sold for search gold mines in Africa .... is good for the search of little nuggets ...
I like the buckle !

Your coil is in the shape of a doggy.

Nice finds! You're going to love that machine. I have the AT Pro, but they're very similar. I'm finding my AT Pro can hang right in there with the MXT Pro and the T2SE.

I also see you have a T2SE! I don't know if anything can hang with those these days, especially for Virginia and North Carolina red clay

Congrats on the new detector. I was wondering when you would upgrade that 250. You probably made some of the best finds with an Ace 250 than anyone else that has used one. I can't wait see all of your great finds with the AT Gold. BTW, nice knee buckle. They aren't that common especially in the south.

Congrats on the new machine! I'm kind of partial to Minelab machines myself....using an SE Pro, but just picked up a CTX-3030. Next time you need any detecting gear give me a shout--I have a good friend who's a detector dealer and I'd be happy to get you a sweet deal through her. Now go find the other part of those 17th century spectacles with your new machine :occasion14:

Can't wait to see what else you find with the new detector. Your dog looks like he's begging to go on a hunt with you :)

I would love to find the other piece of the spectacle. I went over there first thing today when I left the detector store, and hoped I would find the other piece, but that is where I found that cool ?tombac? button. I plan to go back with a rake and till up the soft dirt around the foundation and see if I can't bring that thing a little closer to the surface.

@ken, thanks for the kind words, and yes I know how hard to find they are. I have only found a few. They are really cool.

@ tngirl he is a really cool pup, got him on craigslist from a woman that was moving into a smaller apartment. He loves to help me dig things up, and is so confused when we put the dirt back in the hole.

Now that is an early site. The knee buckle is the best find of the hunt. I would flip some more iron out of the way.

Keep us posted on what you dig up at that site. I'd still like continue the research on the piece that you found as the various sources have different spellings etc. for the names--hopefully the guy from Germany will give us some information soon. Would be cool if the rest of that spectacle turns up and I hope the glass is still in tact somewhere there in the soil. Wish I was closer as I'd love to run my Minelab CTX-3030 on that soil. Regards, Erik
