This was back in the 80's when I was like 6 or 7 years old, my family just moved to a new apartment in Whittier CA. Right next door to our place was an empty field. Well after a few days I meet all of the other kids and we started to play in the field. One day my new buddy bent over and picked up part of an old torn and crinkly sun faded $50 bill. He said that rad or cool (something like that), then he tossed it back on the ground. I picked it up and said are you crazy!!! He said that money is all over the field, its no good. Well I ran inside and told my parents. We all went out and started to find pieces of $100, $50, $20, & $10!!! Most of the bills were just 1/3 to 1/2 bills. We found a few bills that had 3/4 too. After school for like a year I would spend all of my time looking for money. Eventually I found almost $2,000 in crinkled riped up old bills. One day we took all of the money to the bank, they only changed out the bills that had both S# partially showing. That sucked, as most only had 1 of the S# on them. We did get like $300 though from the bank though.

My ma had a friend on the block and she asked about that old empty lot. I guess an old couple had a house there. On the other side of the house a new apartment was being built and it caught on fire. It burned the apartment that was under construction down and it caught the hose on fire too. Well both structures were eventually bulldozed to the ground. I guess the old couple didn't believe in banks and must of buried their money in the yard. When the bulldozers leveled the area the money got all chewed up and redistributed all over the lot.

I remember I took the rest of the money that the bank wouldn't change out to school a few times for show & tell. I also remember putting them in a plastic bag and taping them to the underside of my dresser drawer. But when I tried to find them again a few years later I couldn't find them.

That was my one and only cache that I found. Well other kids found it first, but they didn't think anything of it or their parents didn't think it was real money...

That's an experience you're not likely to forget. Have you been back to that spot?

No we moved to IL a few years later. I did however looked at the place on Google Earth last month, the lot is gone and an apartment building is there now. I wish I had a metal detector back then, I bet the place had a lot of coins too. >:(

so thats how it all started, cool story 8)

That's a great story, I can only imagine what a lot of new buildings are sitting on top of...alas...
