Today I went out metal detecting with DDub & Lookn4seated out in the woods and we all found some great stuff but I will let them post what they found. This half was worn as a necklace as its still in the bezel, When I 1st seen it all covered in dirt I thought it was a forign coin. :tongue3: This is my 2nd 1800's half in a week (other was an 1894o Barber) and were going back to metal detect that site again in the morning!!!

Update 3/25/11 I got a few more coins but no silver... I can find the iffy IH's but the barbers absolutely refuse to get under my coil! tongue3 This is what I found today:

1888 IH
1895 IH
1901 IH
1910 wheatie
1941 wheatie
1889 V-Nickel
1941 Jefferson
thimble (I think its silver but haven cleaned it yet)

Re: Columbian Exposition 1892 Half Found!!!

It amazes me how you guys just keep finding ground that produces for you. Great research I'm sure. That half is just outstanding, a tremendous find. Congrats.

WOWEE! I'M MOVING TO CHICAGO! I totally love that coin! Didn't know such coins existed! Looks in excellent condition. Andi

This was the first commenorative half that the US Mint ever made. They were made only for 2 years (1892 and 1893) with the 1892 being the scarcer one (950,000 minted versus 1.5 million for the 1893). They were sold at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago during 1893. However lots were apparently unsold and later released for circulation at face value. All in all congratulations on the find, great one :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft:

Yup in the winter months we do a lot research for old sites that we can pound once the snow melts. :icon_pirat:

You are what I want to be when I grow up... metal detector extraordinaire! Seriously though, great find with the Columbian half. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. I enjoy your videos and site bro. Take care and HH!

That damage at the top is just the bezel and not the rim of the coin, its wrapped around the rim of it like a ring. :icon_pirat:

Thanks for the great comments guys, were headin back here in a few min to see what else we can get!!! :icon_pirat: :icon_pirat: :icon_pirat:

Thats a nice silver coin and small tribe of Indians is always good. I love to hunt the woods as they are usually trash free.
