Amazing find, pretty cool that you can identify the soldier who owned it. There was fighting all over Southern Texas along the border between the Texans and the Mexicans back then. Do you know what unit or whatever he was in? That could tell us a lot more about where that thing has been.

record-image_33SQ-GYTH-QH1B.jpg ........also I have seen a record of him being drafted for WW2 at 40 something years old. Your tag is from WW1 though.

WOW! If he was drafted say in 1942 for WW2 he would have been 49 years old!!! Really?

Well, I should have said I had seen a registration card for draft. I am not sure he served during the second war or not. Here is that 1942 registration card. The previous pic was from WW1.

Wow, this was an incredible evolution on this thread!

Everyone here nailed it, and very quickly. That's why I love TreasureNet.

My tag also had the middle initial wrong. Wilford S Culley it said. Turns out it was Wilford F Culley. I think my tag listed the unit he was in though, it is now on loan at the local museum so I can't check.

I wasn't 100% sure if it was a P or an R because of the gouge right under the letter. This tag looks like it sure took a beating.

My son wants to be in charge of trying to locate Mr. Zuber's heirs. I will let you all know what happens.
