I dug this seated quarter today but the heads side is engraved with the word excelsior. I wondering if this has anything to do with the ny militia because I know that word is found on there buttons. I also think it was a coin ring due to the solder on the back. Any help is much appreciated and thanks in advance- Justin

Thank you I think it was a ring at one time due to the solder.

I dont know the meaning of excelsior in this context but with flowers I would have to agree with releventchair. Very cool hand engraved love token made into a brooch.

Well one thing I do know is that it has rays above the eagle. I can positively date it at 1853! The 1853 was the only seated quarter with rays.

I figured it was an 1853 because I found one last year but with an o mint mark.

As I said in my post "New York Motto" I think it is political and not a love token, possibly a campaign piece.....Joe McDonough

Sounds plausible.

Are you saying if it was worn or made for political or campaign purposes, its not considered a love token? As far as I know there are 2 basic requirements for a love token
1- The engraving must be on a legitimate coin.
2- The engraving must be done by hand.

Do you have any other examples of coins engraved for campaign purposes? I just like to learn thats why Im here.

Here are examples of love tokens from the Love Token Society. http://lovetokensociety.com/pictorial-2/

I don't agree that it directly connects to New York theirs no evidence of any depiction of the seal or reference to NY Just an ASSUMPTION from the poster , that the word excelsior cannot stand alone! It can and it does ,higher , loftier ! ,

Very cool info thanks guys. Unfortunately the true meaning of this piece was lost we don't know who engraved it. The militia thought was just a thought. Though others on other forum that collect ny militia items think it could be a 1 corp New York militia but the provenance isn't there it wasn't dug from a camp. It's just a really cool piece if folk art now.
