i don't have a clue, do you?

i found this thing while detecting around a old home site from the 1890's or so. it is made of stamped brass or bronze with gold accents. it measures 3in x 2in and the slot measures 1/4in x 1 1/2in. the photo does not really do it justice as it is really pretty and looks like it was expensive when it was new. it weighs around an ounce or so and has 2 mounting holes for screws or nails.

It looks like a vintage letter slot opening for a door.

Too small for a letter slot. I have company tonight, but my thought's was a cover plate for a small indicator guage or horizontal dial face?? Can't seem to google what I mean in the couple minutes I had.....

Similar to this......

Looks like it may belong to an old radio.
Where the stations would be viewed.

You know you might be on to something, there was some broken bakelite and an old tube base laying around in the dirt. it's a shame it does not have any marking's on it. i never thought about a electronic device, it look's so old i was looking at mailboxes and house number sign's. it reminds me of something you would put on your mailbox with your name or address in the little window.

Bottle opener? does the top protrude a bit further out than the bottom?

is there a V on the top protruding part?

the top does overhang the lower lip some but the issue is it is made of very thin light gauge brass or maybe bronze. if someone tried to use it for an opener i think it would break or at least bend to the point that it would be ruined. it might be a 32ND of an inch thick on a good day, to me it looks like some sort of cover or decoration.

I would go with the first answer from Wells, a coin slot. Silver dollar was an inch and a half.

I dont remember buying anything out of a machine with a dollar other than gambling but it could have given change. Ill go with coin slot. Slot machine?

I love the old token slot machines. The last time I dropped in the casino, the machines had a paper tag! I was in shock. Its just not the same. I loved the ching chang of the jackpot coins dropping and trying to catch them all in a large cup.

Could the "thingy" be upside down from the photo? Making the larger lip be on the lower half?

Great pics but you should have added something in the picture for size reference. I know you stated the size but its easier for the mind to visualize. I keep thinking a letter will fit easily but its just my mind playing tricks on me, having nothing to compare with to visualize.

Front and back is great but can we see a side view? Thanks.

Is the protruding lip rounded?
