I don't have a clue do you?

I found this at a old home site.I really don't know when the home was there we haven't found
any coins to date. This item is made out of very thin copper that reads PATENT APP'D FOR,the
back is blank.I really don't have a clue what the increment's are,I put a metric ruler beside
it but millimeters are off. This piece isn't broke off it is whole. So I am asking for some help.
Does anyone know what this is used for.
Thanks in advance.

Re: I don't have a clue do you?

What would the measurements be.They don't match up with anything that I see on the ruler.
1/16, 1/8, 1/4 or 1/2.

You had the original scale idea.

Here's a snip from the wiki. Troy weight is a system of units of mass customarily used for precious metals, black powder, and gemstones.

Named after Troyes, France, the troy system of weights was known to exist in medieval times, at the celebrated fair at Troyes in North Eastern France. One cubic inch of distilled water, at 62 °F (17 °C), and at a barometric pressure of 30 inches of mercury, was determined to weigh 252.458 troy grains (gr).[1

Troy pound (12 troy ounces)

this is a picture of an old brass scale i have. the length from 0- 12 is about 2 inches. not exactly the same, of course, but similar.

I'm pretty sure that would measure some sort of weight, not length. That is close on the pic though. Does it say any unit on the face...lb., oz., etc.?

Doh.. :tard: I just re-read your post Burg...all I can say is I'm an idiot. :tongue3:

I thought the same thing but the slot is not right. The hole/slot is almost like that of a level bubble. :dontknow:

This piece is cupped a little. It isn't flat.It don't look like anything has ever slid up or down
in the slot because there isn't any marks on it.I don't know if any of that helps or not.

Re: I don't have a clue do you?

I wonder if it isn't a pocket size line gauge for a printing...12 picas is just about 2 inches.

I think you got it prokosla :icon_thumright:

1 postscript pica = 4.233333 mm, which would convert 12 picas to 1.9999 Inches. Maybe a leather strap went through the slot and it could easily have functioned as a handy tool for a printer attached to say a breast pocket.

Fortbball9, what's the measurement between 0 and 12? Based pic it looks about right with 2".

Re: I don't have a clue do you?

The exact measurement with a set of dial calipers is 2.020.
With a ruler it looks to be 2 inches and 1/16.
Hope this helps IronSpike

Re: I don't have a clue do you?

Perhaps the slot was for a screw to pass through to be loosened and allow for re calibration, similar to the cylindrical one in Bigcypress's Photo.

Thanks, J.K.

Re: I don't have a clue do you?

A typographer watch fob pica ruler. The slot doesn't appear to have any logical function with the scale itself. The relic in design is similar to a 'basic' ruler. Maybe the fob didn't catch on very well and the relic is scares in numbers.

It's an interesting old relic and a keeper for sure :icon_thumright:

Anything on the back side of the piece?

Speaking of taking Postal out of the equation...I was passing by the Main Post Office and noticed that the flag was at half mast...wonder if there's a job opening...

here in michigan we fly the flag at half staff when a solidier from michigan gets killed in Iraq, could be something similar locally.

neat find by the way, looks like the experts have this one nailed

I am starting to agree with IronSpike. But to be honest I'm still not sure. But that sounds good to me.
I will unmark it just in case someone else comes up with something.
