I.D. this iron object and I'll send you one!

I've been trying to i.d. these for a year or so with no positive answer. A few people have made suggestions but I can't find any photos to back up the ideas. The site is most likely a C.W. campground and the dimensions of these objects are roughly 3 and 1/2 wide, 2 and 1/2 tall in the center and the spike on the back is about 2 and 1/2 inches long. There are 2 little spikes on the front that are about 2 inches apart and stick out about a quarter of an inch. A pic of the same object with i.d. would be greatly appreciated!

I know your lookin for a positive id, but I have no idea but a guess. Maybe some sort of black smith tool. Here's a pic of some black smith tools. Maybe it's just another type or homemade.

Did you find them all together or individually or, as I am guessing, in pairs?

Mobes,
Those "things" in your picture are called Hardies.
And yes they are a specialised Blacksmith tool.
but they are not what is pictured here.

This is something entirely different
don't know for sure what but definitely not a Hardy.

Temporary grave marker until stone can be set? I don't want one thanks anyway. M ??? nty

P.S. plot # is stenciled on the front and the spike goes into the ground. IE: G10 Section G, Lot 10, and cemetery records will show who is planted in that spot for when the headstone arrives. Could have been "planted" on a battle field to show who was buried there after the battle. Not sure, but very similar to the ones I have seen in the local cemetary. Monty

I wonder if they are some type of Box Pin...the main spike being the pin and the two little ones go ito the wood for stabilizers ...the metal plate would defiately stop wear on the undercarriage .

Thanks for the ideas. Trikikiwi, they were not found in pairs but all were found within a 150 foot radius. 1 was found in a 8 foot pile of dirt and bricks in a gully right on the outside of the high ground, 1 was found in an area with lots of iron debris, the other 2 were on the high flat ground about 100 feet apart. All were near surface finds, within an inch of the coil.
Monty, PBK thinks you might be right and is looking for evidence. :)

by any chance was there or is there an old rail road near by? If so that would be my guess that they butted up against the bottom of the rails.

Along the same idea, I thought at first that they look like some type of antique motor mount, without the rubber. The pins being to secure it or for some type of alignment of something. :icon_scratch: just a wild guess.

Are there any remains of threads on the shaft or pins?

As Chopper has noted, I tend to agree with Monty that these may be cemetery markers. However, perhaps they served as lot markers, rather than actual grave markers. Here are some modern examples— basically, a small metal plate or plaque with a big spike on the back.

LOT MARKERS
"You can save money by sending a plat of the section involved prior to the final survey. We can then have your numbered lot markers at your cemetery ready for the surveyor to lay out the section. Then, when he stakes out each lot, he can stick the appropriate marker at the right place. Your section is surveyed and all numbered or letter markers are in place without your having to touch them....Plan ahead, save time and money with precast markers. (All lot markers are plain. Letters and numbers are ordered separately at an additional charge.)"

I have enhanced one of the items and find that it appears to have 2 screw heads where you refer to bumps on the other side... rusted off screws? There is also a bevel on the bottom (wide edge) noticeable on two of the items, leading me to believe that these are brackets of some kind, for draperies?, closet rod, or drapery tie back , or something similar.
Good luch with finding the definite answer

Am I seeing correctly that there is a hole in the base of the pin on these?

Re: I.D. this iron object and I'll send you one!

Thanks for all the ideas.
PBK, Great thought about lot markers. I hope they're lot markers and not grave markers as I've dug many bullets, buttons, etc. from the area and have ripped up 400 stumps with a backhoe.
Galt 1073, definitely looks like screw heads on the backside of the one but I think the thickness is consistent throughout and the bottoms are not actually beveled as they appear.
NH benz, there isn't actually a hole in the spot indicated but definitely appears to be one on the photo.
I plan on going to several cemeteries in the area in the next week or so and see if I can find similar markers.
Maybe there's a forum for old-school blacksmiths?
Thanks again.

Obviously there was a Cat House in the vicinity... usually can tell by the number of hoes :tard:

Those look like cast iron Victorian shutter mounts. Keepers would have been inserted into the two holes in the base of the hinge pin to hold the shutter in either the open or closed position.
