Lots of good ideas but none seem close... I could break it open and see what is inside but I'd be afraid it would be nothing then I'd lose a neat conversation piece... Still looking

Did you find it at a home site? This patent for a flush tank might be a possibility..?

Picture / Video link did not come out -- repost picture of item

Old marbles in Chinese checkers game were striped different colors for up to six players -- could be something like that.

Clearly the two halves were made in a mold(s) and then put together. The clay used to stick the two pieces together is easily seen and crudely finished. From this information you can deduce that it was made that way because they could not make it in one piece or they wanted to put something inside it. If it is truly ceramic and there is something in it then whatever is inside it would have to be able to withstand the heat of firing the ball. To find out if there is something in it you could have it xrayed, cut it open, or weigh it and then weigh it using the method to find out if the specific gravity is different(method used to weigh nugget specimens in quartz). The inside could be lead, maybe even gold, maybe somebody was smuggling gold hidden in it, not likely though. If you do decide to open it be very carefull. A tile saw would cut that in about 15 seconds.

Due to the crude fabrication I still say it is a projectile. Probably used for a sling. The perfect sling projectile is about that size and round. You could literally make hundreds of those in a day or two and not worry about losing them. Much easier than trying to make a rock perfectly(or close) round.

After seeing it next to the golf ball, could it very well be the the core of an old golf ball? I took an old golf ball apart, it was very old and took off all the windings and it looked just like that.

I was thinking that too but wouldn't the center of a golf ball need to bounce back? Maybe the center of an exploding golf ball. I have to agree with the ammunition theory. During the civil war they might have been able to mass produce clay grape shot a lot cheaper then lead. Just a thought I thunked up in my thinker all by myself. Swiz

Actually a harder core allows for distance. There were numerous patents on materials used for golf balls and ceramic or other types of materials were used in the past. It may not be 100% ceramic but a mix of materials.

It looks too large for this, but they did make thousands of different kinds of CODD BOTTLES. They used a stopper that was a glass or ceramic marble and the action of the carbonated water kept the marble pushed against a rubber gasket inside the bottle. it is possible it is a large size bottle version of this. google Codd Bottle and you will get the idea I am thinking of.
Neat!
