Well, like the title says, I think I may have found my first diamond today.

I was hunting an old school along the soccer field sidelines. A really bad storm was on the way after an intense heat wave and I had very little time. I got a faint signal I assumed was more junk but dug it anyway. I've been doing that a great deal lately in the hopes of some gold. I got a real surprise when I picked this target out of the hole.

It's a small "diamond" stud earring. Unfortunately, the pics don't do it justice. I compared it to some known cubic zirconia stones on a silver ring I found and there is just no comparison. This thing has real fire and lots of color. The CZ stones do not, despite the fact that they are larger and there are three of them.

It also easily scratches glass and passes the breath test every time. It WILL NOT hold heat for more than a brief moment no matter how much you fog it up. The CZ stones clear up as well but it takes much longer. I even scratched an old antique bottle made of really thick glass and it scratches it with no problem. OTOH, high quality CZ will also scratch glass according to what I have read.

It's about 1/8" across and about 1/16" from top to bottom, tapering down to a point at the bottom. I have no idea how that would translate karat wise.
The setting looks like gold but it's not marked that I can tell.

I don't know a darn thing about diamonds (other than they're expensive and women love them) and I won't know for sure until I get it checked out.
If it's real I guess I'll be pretty happy. If it's fake it's one beautiful fake and still a cool, fun find.

I'll try and find out for sure tomorrow.

If anyone here can spot a fake a mile away and thinks this is a fake, please let me know. I'm not going to assume anything until I know one way or another. I wish I could get better pics but my camera has it's limitations. This thing is just so small I can't get a good close up in good focus.

Thanks for looking and HH.

Whether it is or it isn't, the thrill will always be there.

Try reading newsprint thru it, see if you can.

Nice!

WTG!

I hope it's real! Congrats!

I tried that and I can't see through it. It's really small though and hard to really say.

Cool dig. Hope it's real for you

Now you got me all excited, hope the jeweler gives you good news!

I wouldn't try and scratch glass. Take it to a jeweler or take a loop and see if you can see any inclusions. Inclusions on real diamonds are gray or black flakes or specks or they are an off-white. True a perfect diamond will not have any, but more than likely it would would be a CZ if it looked too perfect.

Hope it's real too! As others have said, try a jeweler next. It's the easiest way to tell than trying homemade methods.

I didn't make it to a jeweler or pawn shop, (closed on Sunday) but I did stop by and show it a woman I know who knows a thing or two about diamonds. She also owns quite a few nice ones.

She thinks it's real. She compared it to some fake ones too and there is a huge difference.

That's still a maybe in my book but I'll soon find out, maybe tomorrow if I get time.

Looks good to me, hope it is =)

*******UPDATE*******

I took the earring to the pawnshop and had it tested. Unfortunately, it's fake. It's a very high quality CZ stone and a fake setting as well. It's still pretty, but a very pretty fake nonetheless. I still like it anyway 'cause the suspense was fun while it lasted.

Oh well, you can't win 'em all. I guess I'll have to go out and dig up a real one.

That's the spirit! A great find no matter what!

I guess what is bad news for you is good news for the person who lost it. I'd be excited to see something like that coming out of the ground.
