I beleive this a well perserved civil war brass compass..can't beleive the condition.

Not sure if this is a civil war... Looks like one .. Was on the out side perimeter of the Gettysburg PA ...battle grounds...found 4 inches in ground wrapped up in what I beleive was some sort of plastic which was well sealed....was a great find... Still excited...

Unbelievable! That has got to be a tough, rare find if I ever saw one! Can you say BANNER?

Thanks... Still shocked..my best find so far...just don't have much history on it yet... Hope to find out more about it..if any one knows please shed some light on it..thanks

Still in great shape for being in the ground congrats! :icon_thumright:

Wow, that is in great shape!

Yeah, pretty sure Civil War soldiers didn't have plastic around, lol...and yes, before someone gets their panties in a bunch, I realize some 10 year old kid in 1978 could have stolen one of dear old Dad's prized possessions, wrapped it in a Sunbeam bread bag and hid it. I would imagine anything found outside Gettysburg would make your heart skip a beat, especially when you found that one square foot in the whole state that you CAN dig in!

One military site says WW2, your first clue should have been the plastic. Sorry no baggies in the 1800s.

very cool, very nice, awesome find

might not be plastic but maybe rubber instead?-- union troops had rubber ground liners ... to keep them from contact with the cold wet ground
