I Am Stumped On This One

Hello All. I found this at an old store site. The only engraving on it is a small "8" with what appears to an "M" next to it. It is very heavy for its size, non-magnetic, and all one piece, not broken off. It was of course attached to something...but what?

No clue, but the double ramps, and oval hole reminds me a slide button release. Slide the button forward, and it pulls up on the lock inside to release it.
Then handle can be depressed or raised to release something.

At first thought, I was thinking of a brief case lock. But it's too thick and heavy for that...don't know...
