My detector took me for a walk in the woods today, and we found what I think is a lead button. It looks like it may have a design or bust on it, but maybe not. It measures 23mm. and is slightly dome-shaped. What are your thoughts?

Very interesting button. My imagination sees a couple of men standing center and a horse on the right. I see legs for the men and even ears for the horse on right. Good luck with the id!

Second thought no horse just another person on the right.

Looks like an oldie....and I can almost see some figures standing too but my imagination isn't so good.

I would guess it may be a homemade button, using the detached obverse from a two piece button as a mold for a lead pour.

And I thought I had an active imagination Gene! :laughing7:

Being cast in pewter and dome-shaped would make me think it's a late-18th or early-19thc button.

Nice find,
Dave

Looks like a fired musket ball with impact to me. I have dug many domed like that from hitting the ground or water, and the nipple on the back looks like where the sprue was cut.

The back is flat with the exception of a small indentation in the center The thickness is a shade over 1/4 inch. I should have provided that info with my original post..my bad!

That was my first impression as well.

It looks like fired round ball that struck something to me.

I sorta thought that at first, but it is very thin and very symmetrical, and has iron staining on the back. I have dug a few impact round balls, but none of them have been symmetrical.

Yeah Dave,
I see numbers on the buttons I find that just aren't there, like 26th reg of foot and so on. I consider it a gift.
