Okay, so I found this little piece of 'junk' on the beach the other day. Three things made me keep it and test it:

1. The beach I was hunting I was getting lots of corroded junk, but this came out without any corrosion (just like gold or platinum would)
2. It felt heavy for its size (again, gold or platinum would feel like that)
3. On my machine (Minelab Explorer), it rang up just like gold would

So...I gave it an acid test using 10K and 14K; it passed both!?!?

At this point I'm shaking my head, because for the life of me I can't see how this thing is gold, it's just a weird thing, and I can't figure out what it is. Here is one more thing to add to the mystery. I wanted to check to see if it is magnetic, as that would be a dead giveaway... Here's the thing, it IS magnetic, but only the small little piece of metal set in the circle (I hope that makes sense). The rest of the metal other than that one little part is not magnetic....

Just wondering if anyone else has seen anything even closely resembling this? I'm thinking I will take it to a pawn shop or something and have them test it too, but it would be tremendously helpful to identify it beforehand...

This thing is just strange to me, and maybe it's junk, but that would make me wonder even more!

Stainless will test like that. Not sure how it would come up on my machine though. But I tested Stainless band as it wasn't marked and that was how it came up it passed my acid test's.

Something that was "spot" welded to something else, probably a gusset from a boat railing.

I'm with back of the boat...prolly stainless.A good clue is how hard it is to get a streak on the test stone.

Did it pass on 18 k ? ... or did you test using this ?

There is a reason that I ask this... although it seems "trivial"

I did try the 18k test, it failed it.
