If you knew of a great site that you were sure would turn up old and good stuff, would it be selfish or wise to MD it alone without a buddy with you?
I was thinking about this, and personally, I understand how this could be seen as selfish. But at the same time, I keep thinking that if there's one detectorist instead of two, you get twice the goods! But maybe I'm just being really selfish.

What do YOU think? :)

I guess it depends. IMO if you hunt a lone most of the time then of course no. If you usually hunt with some people and they have waded through the lousy sites etc and shared their good sites then it would be more unfair to exclude them. That would be the starting points to how I would look at it I guess. Different in many situations.

Personally, I don't worry too much about taking people with me. I get more out of having the company than what comes out of the ground. At least most of the time ;)

WELL THAT ALL DEPENDS, on whatever you set your values on, is friendship and camaraderie more valuable, or is it your material items you find the most value?. for me i just like to come and go as I please, without trying to persuade someone else.
i prefer to be alone!

MIKE ("Visionquest") pretty much said What I would have.

? Anything I would Say here would be Just Repeating with Other Words.

Do you normally hunt with a buddy and now have heard of a great spot and dont want to share? Hmmmmm? Fess up!
What happen to all for one and one for all??? :-*

If you are a loner like me...then it doesnt matter..

In the technical sense...nothing. :) I don't actually have a detector even. I started getting interested in it late in the season, and now it's too cold. Plus I'm broke. :) But yeah, just thinkin! :)
But I do have a ton of ideas for great places. The original structure of my house was built like in the 1840s I think. A civil war battle took place here, and it was occupied by union troops throughout the entire war. There's a bunch of other places too. We'll see!

Sounds Like you Have Good reason to Get a Detector.

? ? If you have a site that you know will produce some great finds. Then yes it would be selfish. ?Unless you invited me of course.
? ? ? ?Since you don't have a detector yet. I'm assuming you don't have a usual detecting partner. So in that case I would say no. If you had a constant hunting partner. Then perhaps yes.
? ?As for myself, I would rather hunt with a partner. I enjoy seeing them make some nice finds as much as when I make one. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? HH

So being the unselfish detectorless person that you are....please send location to the rest of us so we can help you out....you of course are invited to tag along.....We will split finds....say 90% us ...10% you ... :o and then you will be able to afford a new detector ,plus the food to feed us as we will all be camping in your yard!

Also ...I dont know about the rest of you , but reguardless of how broke i was and I lived on a civil war site....... I would be duct taping magnets to my shoes ..... if nothing else and dancing over the entire site!

gypsy...I see you have plans. I'm guessing that there won't be tons of CW stuff around here. But I only say that probably because I try not to get my expectations too high. Plus it's in the middle of downtown, where it supposedly happened (I need to go do some research...very little online.), so most of it is either buildings or paved streets. But there's grass around the courhouse and a couple places.

Jeff...believe me when I say, I would love to have one. I really just need to stop wasting my time and money and do something about it. I'm kind of tired of just thinking about it. The bedrock is pretty shallow around here. In some places, just a few inches. I'm hoping stuff just got buried and settled that few inches, maybe a couple hundred years ago. But this is me dreaming... :)

If I know of a good site, I would rather have someone along. I think a little friendly competition tends to make you concentrate harder. If you do find something good its more fun if you have someone along to show it off.
I have also found that when detecting with a friend I tend to stay at a site a little longer than I would if I were alone.

This is a very interesting question. But, like most of the others I'd have to say it depends.

If I knew of a small site (like a house yard, etc.) with fabulous potential I'd hunt it alone. If I was going to hunt acres of farm or woodland I'd really appreciate company. Not only is it more fun to have company but it's also very practical. Two or more have a better chance of finding the hot spots. And too, if you decide to have a heart attack, break a leg, or fall down an old abandoned well, it really helps having someone close to help.

So, I guess that would be my answer.

In my opinion the majority of coin hunters would share their new locations with their friends. After all they are doing this for the fun of it and having your friends along is simply more fun. What's the harm in sharing some corroded IH pennies with friends?

But what if we upped the ante here and real money is involved?
This discussion of "sharing tour finds" was discussed on another forum. A nugget detecting forum.
If you found a new gold nugget "patch" which could be worth many thousands of dollars would
you share it with your detecting friends?
The smart money would be--- No you wouldn't tell your friends.
No you wouldn't post your finds on the internet. No you wouldn't even discuss it period.

:D I believe everyone here has a valid point! Myself I have found that when, I have young people have been out with them just trying to learn to detech. Both out us trying to learn on my Ace 250 and that if they even "THNIK" that you see something they want it ! But thats youth! They make it fun! But if its serious hunting I would go alone. Then share the stories of your hunt! Over a camp fire or something! We all need our own stories to tell ...some aren't on a hunt together, some are!

If you have talked about what you are interested in, and maybe your having been a good boy all year ;) you will get Santa to bring you, the new detector you want! Good luck! And Merry Christmas! ;D

One thing that can increase the fun is a little competition or friendly wagers. I have a good friend that I like to hunt with. We usually have a wager, like a six pack of beer on the first silver coin etc. Make things a bit more interesting and fun. If you are new try and find someone to hunt with that is experienced. You can learn a lot that way.
