I got together with Mark for a hunt at a few sites that have been on the back burner for a while, pretty good results...
I got 2 keepers, Mark brought home a handful :hello2:
A jacket size pewter 'Infantry star in Oval' 1812 era,
got the cuff size last year :D
The other is a rather ornate lead seal, looks like a large anchor in center and a smaller one off to the side, Naval :icon_scratch:
I'll let Mark describe his own hunt, but I find it VERY odd that we both got an example of the same pewter 'I' button (and not a common find) about 500 feet apart...
Also dug another 'Toy size' pewter saucer, this one is a bit larger than the other, and has floral design, the other was plain.
I wonder if they are from a childs 'Tea Set', or are they something else :help:
A smooth copper and 18mm cupronickel coin that is a mystery...
decent hunt with a great Guy!
Thanks for looking & HH to all!

Hi Swed :hello:
Thanks for the research attempt!
I haven't attempted to ID the seal yet, I will be searching later on some finds and relic sites.
I love this hobby too!
Am fortunate at this time to have several good possibilities on new sites,
I am having a hard time deciding where to go first :D
Enjoy your posts and love your Avatar :o . Cheers to you and your Cat ;D

Well done Sir Herbie. :hello2:
That little pewter saucer is very cool.
In the top photo, bottom row, left side, green patina, is that a keyhole cover? :icon_scratch:
Congrats on a super day,
Doug

:icon_thumleft:

Cool stuff as usual! :headbang:

Thanks All!
Pete, you got that seal matched, the design anyway. the text may have changed somewhat, but those 3 anchors are there.
looks like there's a date on the web example...
Many thanks for digging that image out of obscurity 'IPXAP' :icon_scratch: :notworthy:
sure looks like APXAP to me..
how much detail depends a lot on how well the sealer squeezed his press ::)
Doug, I don't know what that item is, it appears to be broken off at the top,
I wouldn't know a keyhole cover from a manhole cover :laughing9:
I found a couple other items from yesterday in the junkpile,
Meat inspector badge fragment :icon_scratch:
Enamelled piece, can't read script..
1931 NH Dog tax tag fragment.
numbered tag, US Navy I think..
great digs to you all! Herbie.

Very cool finds! I like the 1812 button and the saucer is neat also. HH!

Nice finds...are these water finds as well? Your pewter looks like the pewter I pull out of salt water.

Indeed they are, the only metal better preserved in saltwater.
The blister and swell sometimes, but details and flaking issues are usually better.
I forgot lead...
lead comes out pristine most of the time, but black without the white patina.
some toys, balls, and ringers look like new..

Herbie, I'm jealous as I have never dug any 1812 era buttons that I could i.d. as such in Tennessee. Great recoveries as usual. HH, Quindy.

Thanks All!
Dave, the base of the item is full of iron/steel remains.
Judging by the overall look, I would guess an early bendix type drive, though the housing seems rather fragile for this.
they are employed to engage the starter drive gear into the engine flywheel for starting.
Picture this: electric motor in housing, when voltage is applied, a small pinion gear (missing) on the wormed shaft gets pushed up to engage the flywheel and spin the engine, when engine starts, a spring pushes the gear back into the disengaged position. if you've ever had a starter fail on a vehicle, it is usually caused by the gear not being disengaged, and the engine continues to overspin the starter.
an ingenious concept, Mr Bendix hopefully collected his due reward for this design.
You will get that silver spoon before long

Thanks for the detailed description of that piece Herbie. Here I thought it looked like another fancy kaleidoscope to me! :laughing7: Thanks for the silver spoon support buddy! ;D I'm heading down to Sand Banks Provincial Park on July 17th for a couple of days with my wife and daughter. Hopefully the "ring gods" will shine upon me while I'm there, more so then they did when I was in Jamaica! :laughing9:
