Hunting Silver

Thanks to this site, I've started hunting Silver. I bought a Bunch of old jewlery this weekend. All of it marked .915, all of it for $25. Over 4.4 oz. Some of it may be marketable as quality Mexican Silver.

Where did you buy it from?

Goodwill is a meca for silver these days, and I'm surprised that know one there buys it before gets out on the floor, also Garage sales, where the seller throws abunch of jewlery together and sells the lot,and not knowing what they have.

I believe it may be a local thing with your luck of silver at the Goodwill. Most of the time they catch it. Though I have found several pieces there myself this past year.
I hope you meant the silver is stamped .925 not 915?

Yes, .925, not .915. I went to Garage sales in my area, about 50 miles northwest of Los Angeles, and started checking the Jewlery. One sale, she had a bunch of silver stuff. Much of it Mexican sterling. There may be collector value on top of the silver value.

I hope you got your silver hunting license or you could get in big trouble. Also, don't hunt silver out of season.

Personally I'd melt it or re-sell it at a higher price later. And but bullion silver or gold with it...

Basically, the pieces that have a maker stamp I will put up on Ebay at Double melt and see what happens. The rough pieces will go into a large jar I've purchased. Once the jar is filled, I will have several pounds of silver (I may do one for sterling, another for "silver"). Anyhow, once the jar(s) are filled, I will find a refiner and melt those bad boys down (or just trade them for refined silver, or silver coin).

I figure by the time I retire, I could have saved up a few thousand dollars of silver.

You should do better than that. I found close to that last year alone at estate and garage sales mostly. Unless your retiring in the next couple years that is! :laughing7:

Well, I've only started looking and found 4 oz. So, we'll see... It's almost saturday again. I am finding a lot of good stuff near xmas this year. People are selling a lot of new stuff that they don't use to raise cash to buy new new stuff they won't use. I buy the old new stuff and sell it to people on Amazon so they can use it as new new stuff they won't use. This kind of reminds me of the South Park that talked about the connection between gold buying places and Jewelery on Shop at home TV. Funny stuff.

Man, you guys have it good! I find nothing but silver-plate around here.
