Hunting just for coins

Sorry I can't suggest a coil option but digging a lot of trash is just a part of metal detecting. Knowing your detector well and what it is telling you with experience you will be better able to know if you are on a coin target. I still dig a ton of junk and while I really only like digging coins also I have found some pretty cool junk while looking for coins.

Well, you will have to eliminate modern zinc pennies and nickles, but it's easy. Just take a 1982 or older penny and use it to test with. Keep increasing the disc control until the cent stops responding then back it up just a bit. You will still dig junk, but not as much. You also won't find any gold.

Thanks for the advice and im not worried about gold as anyone that lived where im MD'ing at would've been way to poor to afford anything gold. I tested a silver dime on pulltab setting and it still gives a strong single is this a good place to keep it for coinshooting?

Hmmmm, leave gold in the ground or dig trash. Choices, choices;)

Sure doesn't sound like the directions I gave, but do whatever you want.

oklahomahunter, I'm having trouble understanding what you're saying here. Are you saying that on a particular disc. setting that the PULLTAB still gives a "strong signal", or that the SILVER DIME still gives a "strong signal" ?

Just do this: take a square tab (preferably the beefier/thicker type) for an air test: slowly advance the disc. control until that square tab is eliminated (but no further !). Or another item to use as this benchmark, is a corroded zinc penny (or a non-corroded one, if you also want to pass on zinc pennies totally as well).

There's lots of places that I too elect to pass aluminum junk, and just go for the coins. Like underneath bleachers, where it's an ocean of aluminum. I just shoot for the coins (and silver coins). Because you're right: in those environments, it doesn't pay to "be a hero" and try for gold and nickels. If someone's that dead-set on finding gold, then what-the-heck are they hunting underneath junky bleachers, or blighted parks, to begin with? If you want gold that bad, simply go to a swimming beach, NOT under bleachers, haha

Yes my detector still hits strong on silver dimes at pulltab setting
And the area i hunt has so much junk Im just going to search over it and look for old coins

Just turn your discrimination dial to Max and you'll get quarter, dimes and some pennies.

Check to be sure. I have one detector that will miss dimes with the disc. full on.

well of course your detector SHOULD still "hit strong on silver dimes" while disc'ing pulltabs out. Because silver dimes are higher conductors than pulltabs. So ....... haven't you answered your own question ?
