Any tips when hunting heavy iron areas would be helpfull. I will be going back to the farmhouse where I got the 1827 dime soon. Most of the back yard is so filled with iron it will null out the machine completely, I can walk swinging and hear nothing. I usually shy away from these areas but I think these areas are untouched to past detecting. Do you experts in Iron detecting dig everything? or use ironmask pumped up with a 5 inch coil? I have one or two more shots at this place before it is sold. Any Tips are appreciated. I mainly use the explorer xs and will use the E-trac if You think it will perform better in the iron mess.
Thanks.

I hunted a field with iron on Saturday (E-Trac). Used the ML basic coin program. Seemed to do OK. Did not find much as the fields were hunted to death. I found that large iron gave a very high sound then nothing. After about an hour I decided to switch to the ML basic relic program. Got mostly the same sounds and results so I am satisfied with the settings. Whenever I hunt with someone I get them to wave their good finds under my coil while I note the reading. This way I am sure I would not have missed anything. I find with a Minelab the more you know the better you get, and you can always learn more.

Use the highest sense and lowest disc. where things make sense to you, and swing the same way you pinpoint looking for a part of a good tone in the noise to repeat! It's where I hunt year after year after year with my XS and now II.

Marty what i learn from others in this forum, its to use xs in iron without discrimination! in ferrous!! but little found about sensitivity! except that it should be manual. but i found that using to high sensitivity in iron makes detector blind!- drop sensitivity! and all the time correct it, depending how much iron! some times I drop sens. til 13 or 10! lower sensitivity will allow detector to see much clear different targets between iron, try small coil after you will check with stock and good luck. dont forget to scratch coil in to ground! So in heavy iron, your first choice is to use MORE discrimination? I remember in the past you made a post saying people with lesser machines were out hunting you at times. Now I can see why...

NJ Marty,

Just an added note: In high iron areas you need to sweep SLOoooowwww. If you think you hear a good signal, change the angle of attack and coil height to resolve the signal. Joe

Exactly, if your in a high trash area with relics, you need to sweep real slow to allow the machine separate the targets. I hunt a spot just full of nails. I'll take a step, swing two or three times. Sometimes, I just catch a blip or different tone. Once I'm sure about where the target may be, I'll continually sweep back and forth until the machine deciphers the target . I hope that makes sense. Like I said, I can explain these things much better to you over the phone.
I hate typing! LOL
