Hunting Along The Erie Canal

I live a few blocks from the Wabash and Erie Canal. The best side to search would be on the side facing the business district in the towns it passed through. Now that it is being restored by dredging both banks produce because that is where they deposit the muck. good luck, siegfried schlagrule

I detected a few hours along the Tuscarawas river outside of Zoar. There was a mill site there also along the river. The towpath was on the easterly side as the river flows southerly. I did not find anything of interest but junk, partly because it was late summer and it gets very overgrown. HH, Mike

Cherokee,
did some tough hunting along different canals
here in Illinois.

Found lots and lots of junk; was expecting better >:(
I enjoy digging dumps, but this was just modern trash.

Dedication would be needed for me to try again. :-\

Give it a try. ;D

Great responses! Especially the 'ode. Anyway, I'm going to start in the Town of Pittsford,NY and head east towards Macedon, NY. From the history that I've read, the barges were pulled both ways so I guess it's not going to matter which side 8) I hunt. Neat thing is that there are a lot of old mills and houses along the way. I should find enough places along the Erie Canal to last me several years. I'll keep you all posted if I turn up anything.
