Today I got out for a bit again and found another first for me, as I was swinging happily, yelling at my son to stay away from the road, I got a strong penny signal on my trusty M6. Laying on top of the ground was my first 2 cent piece, an 1866. This coin is beautiful, full of detail and looks like the day it was dropped 142 years ago. About 5 minutes later I dug an 1869 indian head penny that is in great shape, then I found my newest coin from this place, an 1915 wheaty, not sure how it got here lol. Well as soon as I get back to my place, ill scan these coins on my scanner, the camera I have doesn't work for nothing. HH....Bill

Nice finds, those farm fields can bring old stuff to the surface and send new stuff deep, such as the can slaw I was digging Sunday. Called you yesterday to see if you wanted to go detecting at my picnic grounds but you didn't answer, but I'd say a nice 2 center and an 1869 IH beat my mercs and wheats anyways.

Why in the world would a 1866 coin be on top of the ground?

Not sure, but last friday I think it was I found my 1881 IH on top. This place is a ghost town, but is also a farmers field, so it is plowed regularly and things are always brought to the surface. Back in NC on my farm, it was a CW Union and Confederate camp for the whole war, I have found 3 ringers and buttons and spur parts laying ontop of the ground, which was not plowed. Eyeball finds are the best, the coins look so much better for some reason.

I have found quite a few older coins on the surface. One was a colonial copper, the other was a 1574 Dutch Oord. I recall seeing a beautiful Fugio Cent here a while back that was an "eyeball" find.
