Yesterday, Bamadad53 invited me on a hunt in Birmingham to an old school site he had researched as a welcome to the neighborhood. Was an excellent hunt with the best find being the first hunting partner I've had since my move. Weather was great, mid 50s and a little windy. The school had been on a hilltop but we weren't finding much until we moved into a clearing through the woods where I found 4 wheat pennies 1942-1951 and partner found several wheat pennies and a very interesting schoolbus fare copper token the size of a quarter. I think together we found several bucks in clad. Boy, was I sure glad we were together because the part of town we were in is pretty rough.
Bamadad53 had to leave after 3 hours but I kept going. I left within about 15 min because a shady character in an old Cadillac pulled over and parked his car across from where I parked mine and we were hunting in a secluded area where there's no reason to park. I'm a fit 6,1 200lbs and with my new Sampson T shovel inhand I probably wasn't worth the trouble.
However, I still had the itch so I moved half a mile to where there's dozens of blocks where old pre-WW II housing had been made and bulldozed down with actually very little surface trash. I detected the sidewalks and found 3 more wheats 1925, 42, 44. Also, a $1 just blowing in the breeze on the ground! Easy money! Where one backyard would've been I found the aluminum play silverware in one hole, they sounded good on the detector! Final hole I dug was a double signal +78 and +82 two inches apart, that's almost always a zinc and copper penny in the same hole, well I got the zinc penny out of the ground and then stick my pinpointer and find the other signal in the sidewall and am very pleasantly surprised when I see a silver edge!! Sorry, no in situ picks, I was filthy and have a brand new phone I didn't want dirt on it! Did some research and it's a vintage Esposito sterling ring monogrammed with a "K", how lucky is that since it's same initial as my last name. Marked "STERLING ESPO" size 5.75, 1.25 grams on the scale! Not a couple of minutes later I heard a gunshot a couple blocks away and took that as my cue to get out of dodge. Hope you all are having a great weekend, I've found silver now 3 straight hunts, just wish Bamadad53 could've been there to see it!
