Good stuff. The point with broken ear is sweet. One does look greenbriarish. I bet its a transitional point regardless of what we name it.

Everything is out of context on these sites. I saw it and thought heavily resharpened.Bottom can be straight concave or bifurcate. Flake reduction for hafting on both sides in not real common later on here. Thanks for the replies.Always a guessing game with little clues ! https://www.projectilepoints.net/Points/Greenbrier.htmlGreenbriar.jpg

Looks like a fun day.

Thanks for taking the time to lay that out like that.

Great post! Can you ID those materials?

Yes all but one. Most are typical bluish hornstone. but # 7 Fort Payne #2, 9 is a shiny black Knox flint #11 grey chalcedony #6 broken tip is really an unknown to me. It comes in a root beer color similar to KRF but not translucent it may also have black bands in it. I have only seen it in Tn Valley and top of Cumberland plateau and have a lot of it. It knaps like butter. :) A member named Treefrog used to find the same stuff. It is always used on older points and never seen it in Mississippian times. Weird. Really would like to know what chert it is if any experts out there.

Since you asked, I think nr. 9 is a cornerr notch that kept being resharpened 'til it was a stub.

Maybe a corner notch that kept being resharpened ‘til it was a side-notch’. Wink wink.

If possible, I’d like to see a few more pics of that one. Although it’s used up, the flaking is very uniform.

Wink ! Lol. I have no idea that is why I asked you experts.Does this look like a side notch to you? Def used up. I have whole examples but imagine things can be resharpened down to resemble most anything. Thanks.

Nice material ! And a neat rust-colored streak in it.

Notice it's an accidental E-Notch from the way the shoulders were trimmed off.

I'd be happy to find that one.

IMHO, pretty obviously a Charleston point.

PS: no-brainer Charleston. Look at the first one pictured @ projectilepoints.net (top left, early stage example).

Notice the narrow notches, set low on the base (lower notches edges on yours are original notch remnants).

And the angle of them.

What you can't see in the picture but would if you had another late stage example in hand to compare yours to is that the dorsal side is bulby while the ventral side is flatter. The result after re-sharpening several times is that, as yours shows, both edges of the top are essentially beveled while the bottom isn't as much. That, with the chevron flaking and the pronounced basal thinning flakes, ID it.

projectilepointes.net. Their format is like the Audubon society field guides. They give you the black shape and then colored examples. What do you think of that site?

I think it's a valuable resource but they could move it closer to completion (lots of missing data) and probably delete some dubiously ID'd points to make it a great one.

Since you asked.

I was afraid you meant doing something like that here, and could see WW III breaking out over reproduction points alleged to be authentic ones. Bad juju for peace & harmony !

Couple years ago thought about doing a data base here but really do not have the time it would deserve. But we sure have the knowledgeable members for it.
