Newbie here, but I’ve been beating up the banks of the rivers around middle Tennessee for 5/6 years now. Thanks for having me and thanks for having a place like this, to learn from others as well as show off a few pieces. Posted this rock this morning on the new profile posts. Figured I’d put it over here as well, hope that’s acceptable. I have a few of these type rock carvings. I was thinking possibly paleo or late woodlands early Mississippian. What’s ya’lls thoughts. Thanks again(and take it easy on me)

I’ve been finding a lot of pieces to old carvings the last 5 or so months on a new site in southern middle Tennessee. Mostly all of them are red chert rock I believe!

Welcome to the forums
They show no sign of being worked by man.
So they're just natural forming rocks that different shapes.
So you’re saying this is natural formation? Just wanna be clear. Thanks for the response.

Not sure what you are thinking what they might be.
If you are thinking its a piece of a Dino, here's a tip.

"Once you think you've got dinosaur bones, do the stick test. Lick one of the ends with holes, wetting it with saliva, then press it into your finger, hold it firm, and count to ten. Bona fide dinosaur bones will stick to your finger so that even if you shake your hand, the bone will stay stuck."

Not chert and not man-worked.
Many rocks break apart over millions of years. Some into intriguing shapes.
You are paying attention to what you see, and that is a good beginning.
Learn what to look for and keep searching. These forums should help you to learn what signifies a true artifact. Good luck 🍀

Thanks again for the advice. Thought I had possibly stumbled on some pieces of a statue of some sorts, being a statue was discovered about 20 miles from where I found those. Anywho at least say I’m on the right track and my eyes aren’t completely deceiving me.

Close to me in Patterson California there is sandstone that has fossilized sticks and leaves in it and if you can get it to flake apart you can see them I have gone there and found some and your one piece looks like part of a tree that as it rotted away the stone replaced the wood. JMO This piece.

Many of us fall under the impression that Native folk were somehow primitive in their ability to depict or create objects in stone. The more you learn the more you realize this is far from the truth. If you were finding actual artifacts there would be no doubt in anyone's mind.. PLUS... you wouldn't be finding more than one.
