This is a pin used to secure personal laundry belongings together when in an institutional setting such as a football team or a military school. The idea is to keep your stuff together when it all looks the same. Each member or student is assigned a specific pin with a number stamped on it to identify the owner.

We used them in the Marine Corp to close up our laundry bag. The bag was a big mesh thing. You put in the dirty clothes and closed it with the pin and they would throw the whole thing in the washer and dryer. That way everyone got their own stuff back and they didn't have to sort it all out.

? ? ? ? ? ? Back in the 60's it was required to get approval from all departments before you were separated from active duty in the Army . This was known as "clearing post". You wandered around with a clipboard full of papers that were signed by the appropriate commanders stating that you did not owe any money or equipment to Uncle Sam . During this time you wore one of those big safety pins from a belt loop in the front of your fatigues . This indicated your status as "short timer" and you were not questioned as to why you weren't on duty . I'm sure it wasn't "official" but it was widespread .

I remember using these type pin also when I was young at the local swimming pool. When you removed your clothes and put them in a basket you were given one of these that matdched the letters or numbers on the basket. You then could pin it on your swim suit.
