Someone was tossing this out today, I grabbed it because it looked old and cool. I noticed some modern nails on some of the corners, maybe just added later to keep it from falling apart, or is the whole thing modern. What do you guys think?

Thanks! It would be great if it is real, I am leaning on it being real based on all of the imperfections, and layers of paint/old nail holes. It looks to be handcarved, with plaster in some places to add texture. Looking at it close up, it is really a neat piece of woodworking. So many small details. I think the things on the sides and top are mean't to look like eagles, I see a beak and eye if a look closely. Anyone have an idea on age? It looks federal era, but I am not exactly a picture frame expert. I hope to use it for a really nice painting, it is really pretty. I'm happy I saved it.

It also looks to be painted gold/brass, not guilded. I can see other black paint underneigh it too, and bare wood in some places.

Sent from my phone.
