I need help id-ing this indian item.It is 9 inches long and is over 2 inches in the middle. It also has notching of some sort. It was found right beside another one just like it.

Also don't know if it help but this was found in West Tn. I really need to get back to where they found this. I wonder why there were 2 of these found side by side? Hope some of the pros tune in on this because I have been looking and this does seem rare having the notchings.Sorry if the pics are blurred.

To borrow DCMatts answer in another post I believe it is a:

Plains Indian celt (chisel)
1300 - 1600 AD

I would agree with the other posts but celts do not have a groove or other modifications for mounting, but was inserted into a socketed wooden handle. Some specimens still mounted on their original wooden handles have actually been preserved, and monolithic axes show mounted celts. Celts are made of various kinds of stone, usually of an igneous or metamorphic rock although softer stones such as limestone, sandstone, or others were sometimes used. I think it is a knife too. I have never seen a celt with notchings- the notchings are only on one side. If it was a celt and they wanted it notched whjy only one side with notchings? May be no answer for this one.

I seen celts where the wood was split and the stone head was lashed on, or maybe they were just for decoration. Now it might the mortar as in mortar and pestle set. Now really cant be used for much more that I can see.
