I am new to metal detecting and new to the forum, but in this past month I have found so much stuff that I am completely and hopelessly addicted. I have a horribly cheap detector and know I would find the mother lode if I had a better one, but I just can’t afford it. Here’s the deal. I live in Louisiana and we are a treasure trove of artifacts. My specific question is (and I will try to get pictures so I can post photos) my niece and I found an arrowhead that looks like stone but tests like metal. It is very tiny, but beautiful. The next day I went out to the same spot (private land and not saying where) on a hunch and BAM, I started pulling out more arrowheads and what appears to be iron tools of all kinds. Most I cannot identify but they are all in the same spot and clearly hand made. Many of them have points and/or wire. My sister suggested they may be writing tools of some kind. About five of the tools are bigger and are semi-identifiable, such as the small, intact metal axe. You can see through all the rust that the blade goes through the top of the handle (very well made) and is very heavy. The other larger tools could be anything. I also pulled all kinds of nails of iron from the same spot, in various stages of being used to make something else. I have saved everything but there is so much I dug till 10:30 last night and had to quit as I was just too tired. The more I pull, the more there is.

Does anyone know of an expert who can help me identify all this stuff? There are about fifty pieces right now, including five arrowheads, and still pulling the stuff out. This is an odd question, but did the Indians use marbles for anything. I also pulled two old marbles out of the dirt, but not sure if they are connected. There is even a button type object, in the shape of a small “o” with a hole in the middle. It is some type of metal, but looks like it was used for decoration more than anything.

Since I wrote this yesterday, I found two more hand held axe type items, what looks like a sun made of iron, what I believe is a stature, an buffolo nickel, a 1919 penny and more miscellaneous tools. All tools, axes, sun and statue are iron and are, I believe, part of the Indian site. I really, really need help with this. I am now bordering on about 100 objects found.

I am sure they lived and/or camped at this spot. Way too much stuff to be otherwise.

I have also found lots of other things in this area, that have nothing to do with the Indians, such as a very old bronze or silver coin (early, early 100AD or so), a Russian art nouveau knife with cloisonne all over the handle, two tokens, an antique iron frog, tons of what pennies, a 1904 penny, tons of modern money, etc. etc. There are many items I cannot identify.

Metal Indian Items

VPNavy, thank you. Let me see what I can do. I have all the stuff with me at work. I did find a large, horseshoe shaped item at lunch. It is not a horseshoe as it is much larger and doesn't have the right shape; though it is similar. I am really glad to have found this site and look forward to a long and lucrative relationship with all of you. If I don't do something properly, please all of you let me know.

VPNavy, I am going to try to get the photos. Does anyone know if the Indians made metal tools, etc?

Sounds lke a good hunt V - What part of Louisiana you from?

Snap some pictures man! I wanna see your loot :headbang::headbang:

i am interested in pictures and what other members have to say also. since i am a newb here and did not think indians worked with iron.
my first thought was you found a cache maybe from pirates , thus the mix of different types of items and from different regions and eras .

post some pics soon .

Just out of curiosity what makes you think what you found is of Indian origin?

There were no items made from iron by native peoples in north America before the white man. We need photos, but it seems unlikely it is an Indian site unless it is a late one where they lived as any other peoples did using iron tools.

I am from the New Orleans area but live on the northshore, where there were many, many Indian tribes. I just posted the pictures on the forum for indentification. The reason I thought the items were Indian is that I first found two arrowheads and then a ax-like item. It just went on from there. The Indians were in my area very, very early to very, very late (1800's). It is my understanding they used metal after seeing the white man use it and took scrap metal to make different things. Photos are posted. I also posted a "coin" I found on a plantation where I work. In addition to the coin, I found the russian cloisonne knife, musket balls and of course, modern money, including an Indonesian coin. I have found a ton of wheat pennies all over town. Yesterday I found a buffalo nickel on my property, an old iron frog at the plantation, an iron disk like object (very small) and gosh, I can't even begin to list all the stuff I have found in the past month.

I posted pictures in the "what is it" or "identify" forum this morning.

Need an enlarged photo of the group of finds to correctly ID any of them. The other item looks like a bale seal.

I posted a larger picture. A seal would have outward inscription projections, not inward, correct?
