Working on a jobsite in Farmington, Mi today. So, Im driving sheet piling on one end of the site and about 200 yards away there is a small crew excavating out an embankment.Late in the day, one of the guys from the other end stops to chat and tells me how they ran into a bunch of "garbage in the hillside.Well, as curious as I was, I wasnt in a position to investigate until the end of the work day.I walked down to the now level area and couldnt believe what I was seeing.Scattered accross the fresh earth were the shattered remains of hundreds of cork tops, blob tops, cream bottles, and canning jars.I started searching for any survivors when the excavator operator popped his head over the hill to see what I was up to.He proceeded to tell me how he had loaded out eight, ten yard dumps throughout the day and every one had probably a couple hunred bottles and jars mixed with the soil....."Thousands of them"! I was just sick!...damn!
After this depressing conversation I dug around for awhile and came up with several pieces left intact.A couple are pretty cool but alot of what was broken on the ground was better.I thought about where they may be dumping the trucks but Im 70 miles from home and working too many hours to be searching the dump piles. If anyone lives in the area Id be more than happy to show you our excavation site and tell you where the trucking company is dropping thier loads.Weve still got alot of digging to do and there may very well be more to come.
My favorites are the super heavy aqua blobtop bottle with iron and brass inverted stopper still in place. The super long neck aqua bottle , and the round, brown medical bottle. It has a two piece bottom a separate neck and top(three piece mold??)also has 1862 embossed on the bottom....date or not??Sorry this is sooo long....heres the pics...enjoy..Joe

J,

very nice bottles you were able to save.
Nice Hutchinson, the one with the stopper.

Shame that you could not get more; I'm sure
the same action is being played out every day
in some part of the country. All those old
bottles lost.

have a good un.............

Oh man. I've seen that happen before and I am just awestruck that no one ever seems to care what they are digging up and throwing out!?

At least you got a few.

I'm a little too far away to go to the dump site. :-\

they are just awsome as far as i,m concerned and i,m sorry that you didn,t get more and i can only manage 1 or 2 bottles when i find dumps. congrat and i,m still looking at the pic :o :o :o

Hey Joe,
sucks to have to work for a living, huh.
Well, you snapped up a few you wouldn't have had,
got to look on the positive side to keep from going crazy.

Thanks for the post, good one!

Smiles!

AWWWW....almost heartbreaking. :'( But really awesome that you could save some of them!

Nana ;)

Nice bottles, sorry to of the missed opportunity. HH, Mike

Hopefully someone takes you up on that offer, I wanna see what comes outta that ground....Nice finds

What county are you in Jopher or what county did they haul them to? .
Arent you close by there ,Boobydoo or Michigan Badger can make a trip down....dang I hate to see them all lost .

At least you got some of the bottles out of there... it's a shame about the rest. Maybe someone can get in there and rescue a couple more before they're gone forever.

My favorite is the heavy blob-top, also. Nice find.

It's a shame about the rest but the ones you saved look great. I think I found one very similar to the smallest one with the flared lip that you have there. At least you have a few and can now look at them and think you saved at least a part of the site.

Hey everyone, thanks for the commiserate replies.
Thanks for the info on the Hutchinson,Sherm.Cool to know what it is .,
Gypsy,I know your hearts breakin..you too Nana and eveyone who appreciates these relics.Im going to do my best to retrieve what I can.I dug into the bank for a few minutes tonight.Found a blob top beer bottle,a glass bridle rosette,an embossed mayo bottle,a Fletchers Castoria bottle, and a sadd iron.Theres still alot in the bank but mostly broken.I dont yet know if this was a dump site or fill for the road bed.If it is fill, we'll be digging up several hundred more feet of it! Ill keep you posted ...Joe
