Any idea what kind of bone this is? It was found in seminole, Florida. Looks like a knee bone or a hip joint? It is 12" wide, by 18" tall by 8" deep. Thanks so much.

It looks like a hip ball joint (located at the top of the femur). If that's the case, that was one big animal.

Welcome. No expert here, but logic would say it's from one of Florida's former residents, like a mammoth, or mastodon, maybe a giant ground sloth. Nice, cumbersome conversation piece. I would display it conspicuously.

From a whale?

I guess mastodon.

I'm thinking mastodon, but I don't know how to find out.

Welcome Shelly,

This is what's known as Aperitif Ivory, AKA soup bone, LOL!

Find yourself a paleontologist, or a marine biologist and have this thing identified!

Best wishes, and good luck!

Is it heavy or light? If heavy, probably a fossil. If not stonelike or mineralized it is modern. I see porous marrow like consistancy. Does it crumble. Great find.
