lately I’ve been wanting to find a paleo point since they elude me out in the ground. I checked ravens relics which has been suggested here before but nothing still available jumped out. I went over to eBay to spin the wheel, lots of fakes lots of way overpriced stuff, I found this guy with a few days to go sitting at a dollar and change, I gave 5 and got topped with under a day to go so I upped it and got it for 20.

I think it could be dalton, and I thought for 20 It would be worth the risk. So it came today and I looked it over, I think it may be reeds springs which would be fine for a Missouri point, the base is ground, not heavily, and the flaking seems nice enough. I don’t see any traces of copper or changes in patina… the one thing I’m not crazy about is how clean it is even in the hinges, but I know I’ve scrubbed some of my finds to a similar level. It also is a little thin and wide for what I would expect but it’s those little turned ears, not much beyond dalton variants do that.
I’m curious what you guys think, did I find a bargain, did I over pay for a not dalton field grade point, is it a fake?

Idk the material in that area but looks like a Kentucky material I’ve seen. I doubt you over paid for it. Looks like it could of been discarded if it broke during manufacturing it. The flaking isn’t Paleo imo so Dalton to Early Archaic would be my guess. If you like it then that’s all that really matters.

I've seen that material from Missouri, but don't remember the name of it anymore. I'd call it a Dalton, and a real one. Good price too.

You got me checking my facts again, looking at an example of reed springs I have, it is definitely different, I was keying on the light patches on the piece but it is definitely much more glossy and does resemble some more eastern materials. Also reed springs looks a heck of a lot like Boone chert in one video I watched.

Also I guess I tend to lump dalton with paleo although they can be considered transitional to early archaic.

A lot of nuance in the flaking on that one. I’m not sure, but my impression is, it looks to be a salvaged or repurposed Dalton variant. Slight coloration difference from basal area up.
I don’t buy points. But if I did, a side interest would be in the artistic works and reproductions of well-known modern knappers. They make representations of what our mind visually sees as perfect.
The vast majority of NA field finds are intended for utility and to assist in survival.
That said, any collection of PFs are wonderful to me.

It’s the second point I’ve attempted to buy that’s why I’m asking about it. The first I sent back after having it in hand for 5 minutes. There is definitely a different feeling when it’s a personal find. Thanks for the input, everyone I’m feeling more certain I didn’t fall victim to eBay arrowheads again.

I believe it to be a Dalton. Probably salvaged, as stated earlier. I don’t buy points, so I don’t know the price/value answer. The thrill of the find is what I like the most. I can understand wanting to expand a collection. You should feel content with your purchase IMO.
