Hello Guys:

My brother found this on private property at Champion Hill in 1993. In regards to "what is it": I feel it is a .69 caliber round ball (originally packaged as a "buck and ball"). As well, I believe it is an homemade nipple protector to a musket. Is this a correct assumption?

If so, how in the world was it constructed? Is lead soft enough that the ball can be pressed down in a way where the lead will enter the nipple hole or cone (notice the thin, tooth-pick like "stick" inside the hole)?

Any ideas about any of the above will be appreciated!

It was made by repeated hits of the hammer. The lead was swaged into the nipple. Lead is very malleable.

I'd say it is just what you say it is.
