How to research treasure leads?

Hi guys,

I was wondering how you would go about researching a treasure such as the Cocos Island Treasure. Besides the wikipedia page on it, I can't seem to find any books about it or even about the ship it was on. Any suggestions?

Newspaper articles, military record archives, shipping records, to separate the chaff from the wheat.

Don't forget Google, showed 10 pages of links to info on it.

My suggestion:
Dig as deeply as you can to find the original source. Work 'backwards' till you find and examine that source; then go forward with that original information. In most cases, I believe you will find the first source may have exaggerated the story or, for sure, subsequent reports will have done it.
