Detector(s) used
garret ace 250
greetings
i am learning how to use the ace 250 and had a question regarding pinpointing. does the coil give a signal as soon as the edge of the coil hits a target or does it signal fron the center of the coil?
i have permission to hunt my buddies property but if i exczvet his yard for him we won't be buddies for long :)
thanks

The detection field is actually parabolic, so a coin at the surface will beep immediately but the deep coins will be more centered. I never use the pinpoint mode. I "X" the hit, and repeat as I lift my coil. The DD coil for my detector is open, so I watch the ground and focus on a point where the beep is centered. I then sweep in a 90º opposite direction. I can visualize the spot, occasionally needing to repeat the "X" to fine tune the specific blade of grass or clover leaf it's under. Then I sweep and lift. If the "beep" holds when the coil is 8" above the ground I know it's very shallow, if it fades as soon as I lift, it's deep. If it crackles in one direction but not the other it's almost always trash.

I them dig and use a hand-held pinpointer to find the object.

I have found on my 250, if you get a sig...move to the right or left of the target and press the pinpoint..move back over the target until you get the best reading on the bars...the target is usually right in the center near the little place that is cut out near the shaft...Good hunting...hope you find lots of loot..

When pinpointing,go left to right slowly, then forward and backward slowly,Make the cross, and also a X movement.Practice and you will begin to understand,You should also invest in a pinpointer, they will save you alot of digging, once you start digging the coin or object, may be on the side of your hole, and because everything is the same color, you would not notice, but the pinpointer would save you time and unnecessary digging, good luck.Ronald99 ::)

I would have to agree with Ronald also...I got one and it saves you from digging to china..or looking like a gopher hole with all the dirt piled around..lol

There are two ways to pin-point with the ACE 250. You should practice both. First is raw X'ing. In this case, you are not getting a signal over the center of the coil. You are hearing the signal as the outer edge of the coil passes the target. Your eyes at this point should be looking at where the outer edge is when you hear the signal. Once that is established and you have a general location, you can engage the pin-pointer. In this case, the strongest signal will be near the center of the coil. The worst mistake you can make here is to listen too closely to the sound or to actually look at the bars on the display. What you want to do is X the target from various angles until in your mind and eye you have the target. Only practice will get you to where you want to be when it comes to pin-pointing. I've found that pin-pointing coins is pretty accurate, where junk such as tabs will give you what I would call deflected locations. In time you might notice that if you can't find a coin that is shallow after more than 2 or 3 pin-point attempts, more than likely it is not a coin. Hope this helps.

Take one coin. Take one poker chip. Place coin under poker chip. Hold coil a couple of inches above ground. Swing and pinpoint. Seriously.
