I have been looking for gold coins and many other treasures and had the feeling someone was watching.( I didn't want to dig it up and get robbed or mybe something else) or mybe the land you were searching you wern't sure who owed it.I have been in places I shouldn't have been,I'll admit it.I have been in the desart out in the middle of nowhere.three guys were just fifty yards away. they were watching me pretty close
and I had some good hits but knew if dug them up,Id be in trouble.so I carry golf tees
and black round stones( I get the decrative rock kind from wal-mart) I put those at my
hits. And pile up some rocks close by so I can find it latter.( turn out those guys were up to no good)But thats another story. If I'm up in high brush i'll find braches and put
up a cross above the brush, so I can find my hits later.Always bring a friend with you!
Never hunt alone. You don't know who's out there.I found a cave covered with over
growth that had some old creats inside(I wanted to go in open them up!)I marked it
with my old shirt tied to the brush a few yards away.We left and asked about old caves
at the park service and what old creats would be doing in there?Glade I did! It was old
dynamite! We went back to find the cave with the sheriff and a bomb squad guy.he said how can you find it?My friend said we will,as I looked across the brush with his
feild glasses. There it is! I could see my old shirt a half mile away.Don't mark your spot
but know where to find it. Be close but not right on top of it.Think what would be natural to the area where you are hunting. An old pull tab or an old can and a rock in it.
a peace of old paper stuck too a branch like it blew there.I was hunting along the hiway
vary well traveled and found a cache of money( alot of money!) I found an old tire and marked it.how many times would you turn over an old tire laying in the meriden of a hiway?( money was from a drug bust)better me than them.I got it at night when there
was less traffic.I hope this gives you some good Ideas.

Thanks konnon,

Those are some good tips and your right. We should not be out hunting alone.

Try the H20 GPS from Acadamy. Its around 189.00-250.00 will get you within about 12-18" everytime. Also its waterproof and floats if that helps anyone

wow my first nite on the forum and already some good advice thanksand keep the good ideas comin ;D ;D ;D ;D

I have marked areas or places I wanted to hunt with my gps unit. I have never tried marking individual finds however. I own a Magellan Explorist 500LE and it is accurate to 10ft, waterproof, and I bought mine on sale off of the Costco website for 179.99 and it came with topo software. Since it's been very cold here and the ground frozen, I just do some research on Friday nights, and go out hiking on Saturday to check out potential spots and mark them all with my gps to hunt them later this spring. I would not really want to mark individual finds, but I do find marking areas does work well. Also with my gps, when I mark an area, I can post comments about the mark and always use it as a reference later.

Seldom need to mark my targets for later, but when I do I use a GPS. That way there is no trash, no problem with the markers getting blown away, or forgetting where I was. It's accurate within a few feet, which is close enough for me. Besides, I hate to see bits of fabric or trash littering the landscape.

GPS will get you to within 12 or 24 feet or so and could be done fairly inconspicuously (The "Man Over Board" feature on Garmins needs only one button push to set the spot). Taking two lensatic or hand-bearing compass bearings off landmarks would also work and observers would have no idea what you were doing. Can't say I ever did that, though. If I find I dig. If I'm in a park I have witnesses and a Lesche tool. If I'm out in the woods I have a .45 ACP in my waistband or in a shoulder holster.

Thank God I've never felt the need to always either be with someone, or to carry... but the truth is it's a little different on the western plains or around the rocky mountain front to worry too much about it. If I don't feel comfortable someplace, I don't even stay at all...

My biggest fear is the Llama that guards the sheep in one of my hunting pastures... LMAO

I can usually see a guy comming for miles...
