I need to figure out how to get the landowner data from the local GIS site to load into Goggle earth. here's the link to the local GIS site that has the land owner property lines and such. Untitled Page
You need to open the site with Internet Explorer. I want to be able to click on the highlighted property and/or get the info with the property lines loaded into GE. This is for Nash County,NC. I can get it to work when I do it for Halifax county,NC, but it appears to be in a differant format. I'm open to ideas. If someone knows how to get all the property lines load into a KML file, please send it to me or tell me how to do it. I'd loveto have a fine deatil TOPO for this area also.

Thanks, Floyd.

You will need to convert your file format to a photo format....jpg for example. Photo formats are the only formats that you can overlay on Google Earth maps to my knowledge. Hope this helps.

If the file is complete and in an open format you could open it in Qgis or ArcGis and export it to a kml format. I've had some success with smaller files but something like the PAR file for a whole county is probably going to make Google Earth choke and gurgle to a slow death of spinning icons.

If you can write kml you could clean up the file and reduce it's size to a fairly manageable level. You just have to know which data fields need to be kept and which can be scrapped.

You will probably want to check the licensing for the County data. Every county I've worked with considers parcel data proprietary and doesn't allow you to keep a local copy unless you pay some money. I've seen pricing from $60 per county to $680,000 per county. YMMV

I just convert the file to. Jpeg and then crop and save the section that im working with. You can't do the whole county at once anyway..as you would be panned out so far that you would lose any detail.

I just noticed that you were looking for a "fine detail" topo Floyd. The best resolution that the US Geological Survey has produced is the 7.5 degree series with 10 Meter accuracy. Just about the same as your GPS unit.

You can get the Google Earth KML file for those from Metzgar Willard for free.

That file, and a lot more that may be useful for mapping can be found in the links on THIS PAGE.
or
You can download the file directly at THIS LINK.

That's about the best you are going to find for Google Earth Floyd. If you plan on spending a lot of time and energy on this project and you want some real accuracy and professional tools I suggest you download and install the Qgis mapping program. It's free and it's as powerful as the multi thousand dollar software. Trying to get repeatable accuracy out of Google Earth is like expecting Mattel to come out with a free armored military vehicle for the public. It's just not going to happen.
