I would like to know how to dig a shallow target 2 inches or less? I don't want to kill the grass in my yard or any other place I dig . But I know if you dig a plug to shallow it kills the grass in that plug and your yard looks like crap. but if you dig a 4 inch plug and knock off two inches of dirt before you find your target that grass will die too . So what do you guys and girls do?

when I find something that shallow, you use the pin pointer to locate it exactly, and then use a screwdriver or similar tool to "pop" the target out.

Slit cut with your small lock blade knife over the target and dig it out with fingers. Easy and quick. Much easier with a pinpointer. Probing with an awl or screw driver? Find the target and pop it out.

I've run into many newbies over the years who have dug vast holes for those easy-to-find targets because they were not aware of the first rule of learning your machine. Get to know how to pin point with it.

That said, I've dug many THOUSANDS of holes of all sizes in lawns. Dare anyone to show me where I've dug in the past. But yes, I do slow down to virtually no digging in the dry months if I'm at green site that isn't being watered. It's practically impossible to recover any subsurface target without zapping the growth when it's bone dry.

LOL I seen a vid where AdventuresWithJim used an M80, it didnt work too good though... :laughing9:

Backhoe, all the way. Ric Savage is my hero.....

Seriously though, most experts use the slit method, described above by Lowbatts. The less roots cut, the less chance of dead grass. Makes a HUGE difference where it matters most, private homes and public parks. Leaving brown spots will shut a site down almost as quick as leaving your holes unfilled.
