And then the coin is heat damaged!

True But when it comes to Professional Coin Buyers, Everything placed in front of them
to buy is damaged. whether it is a nick from another coin,
or ugly toning. it's a reason to subtract from value.

but think of it this way.

if the coin is so bad , you don't know if it is a coin or a slug, or
from when or where.

that heat damage becomes a treatment that adds to value :laughing7:

the 1794 Cent mentioned above if here today, may be worth a Buck
as a Flat Slug to a Curious kid.

but $20 or more to a Collector who needs it to Fill a spot in a Collection till a better one comes along that they can afford.

we all have OBLITERATED coppers to try this method. hope it works :dontknow::laughing7: gots nuttin' to lose ???

wish I was googling all day like Jeff to find threadworthy stuff to post

actually that was probably an old paper next to his recliner

More importantly, is it the heat thats important, or is it what the coal shovel was made of, or exposed to during its lifetime that made this work??? Otherwise just slam the penny on a red hot electric stove burner..

I think it's the Extreme uniform heat.

It reads like the coin must get Red hot.

and of course once it cools down, it most likely is a slug again.
and it will take away the nice green toning.
but as I say......
What's the difference between the value of a Slug ?
and a Slug you know for a fact is a Chain Cent ?

Definitely a few bucks & the high of knowing :laughing7:

I do wonder if it only works on Non Dug Coins though.
like Nic-a-date doesn't work so well on Dug Buffalos
because the ground seems to change the molecules after awhile
(molecules ? Is that the Right Word ?

besides coins, I have heard of people Cleaning Rust with fire.
I've actually tried using heat in the past to clean relics, by placing them in the coal stove.
But other then turn them Black,
I don't remember much Progress there.

grabbed a smooth what I felt was a Farthing from my pile----hit it with a propane torch (not able to get it red), and as it got black--the lady on the bench appeared with a right facing bust, spotted a VERY weak partial date. NEED ME MORE HEAT :laughing7:
