How Reliable Is The GPS System?

You know....some people just shouldn't drive. ;D

Somewhere along the line you have use common sense. If it looks like a curb, it probably is a curb. Sheesh.

The autonav systems have limitations, which is why we were all issued Mark I eyeballs. In aircraft, I'm told, pilots are told to trust their instruments. When driving- trust your eyes!I have had my Garmin system tell me to turn on roads with different names than what the "box" told me. Remember, the autonav is only as good as the person entering the information - folks today have forgotten all about the old computer saying, "GIGO" OR "Garbage In, Garbage Out". As far as being in the field, I've never been lead astray by either of my handheld GPS. With WAIIS (WAAIS?) enabled, and a clear line of site, I am often within 6 - 9 feet of what I am seeking. Better than a compass.

I guess the Germans just know one defense. Been using it for decades. "...but I was only following orders...."

on the water i use both loran and dp-gps-with no land marks-and wide open ocean-i can come back to an area and be dead on target-but you have to know how to operate the equipment-

That's the key Gotta know how to use your equipment. When I got my second GPS I finally figured out that destruction manual was for. My Garmin on a laptop puts me within 5' plus I can take my maps with. I can do all my armchair research then take it with. I also learned to keep the left eye on the road and the right on the GPS.... Naw, don't ask :o

The hand held works great... just try geocashing, gets you darn close. I use it in the desert as well. Now the car one i use sometimes aint too bright... but then you are limited to its programing and the nut behind the wheel ;D

due to the "lag" in receiving info, while driving, a gps unit will tell where you were a few second ago. But for field use i have found them to be very accurate.
