I have a Garrett Infinium and have found it to be very quiet with the 8 by 10 DD coil. However,it does act up when it is in the salt water.I have read Steve's post on how to get the infinium to perform better in Salt Water. However he stated that it was still noisy.I have an idea that I would like to have some feedback on: What if I wrap the the coil cable with another layer or 2 of serious EM blocking/shielding material, possibly of the type used with coaxial or fibre optics cables? Then seal the ends and overlapping portions with silicone to make it water proof. There are companies that sell the above mentioned EM blocking materials.

What do you think? ??? :help:

After ground balancing it....try keeping the threshold at zero and advance the disc up to 2-3. That should help a bit if you are hunting in the water. Sometimes submerging the box under the water helps too.

Get the mono coils, much better in the salt water!

I use the 8" mono but have since started using the 10x14" mono with greater results!

If you have an older Infinium or purchased it used it might need to be updated from Garrett.
They can tell you if that's the case from the serial number.

Set the disc to zero, threshold between 4 & 6, switch to fast track and move/bob the coil slowly up & down 1 to 6” over the area until you get a smooth signal (usually takes me around 15 seconds). Next, switch to slow and repeat until smooth and go to “lock” (test the coil again to make sure it's ok). Slowly move the disc from "0" to "3" but never more than "4 " while testing in the wet sand and into the water. Don't rush it as this is very important to getting the machine correctly ground balanced! Garrett states to either start the gb in slow or fast depending the conditions and then into lock. I've been setting it from fast to slow and then to lock and it works for me. It's important to always start with the disc set to “0” or it kind of messes things up from that point on. Do the gb again in the water if needed, I find I have to gb from the sand into the water more often if there's heavy areas of black sand I'm hunting. Also take the time to find the quietest operating frequency for the area you're working!
Thanks!

First balance it. Once you have the balance perfect, slap it against a rock real hard. It'll quiet right up!

If you want to find buckets of info re the Infinium try;
www.goldminingcentre.com.au
Click on "Metal detectors", Click on "New Articles Various" here you will find an Infinium field Test, and if you then click on "Forum" you will find the Aussie "Garrett Infinium Prospector Network".
There is heap plenty info re the Infinium there.
Cheers.

They upgraded the cable. I assume this was to improve the shielding. Later units were de tuned for improved use in salt water with a mono coil.

I wouldn't try to shield the shielded cable, probably a waste of time.
Remember the coil will pick up far more interference than the cable.
You could shield the coil, it would run quiet, but wouldn't find much
at all.

I cut pieces of foam and put them in the headphone cups I run threshold 2-3 & disc 0
