I found this horse shoe close not to far away to a house built in 1809 1810 ish there is also a barn that there still using as reeactment for civil war is it barn related or house related there was a lot of civil war in that area. Is it to a civil war horse confederate and union how do I preserve it from falling apart what type of shoe is it horse or oxen why does it have a few nails in it how old is it what century? 20201230_141940.webp20201230_141946.webp20201230_141935.webp20201230_141956.webp20201230_142007.webp20201230_142029.webp20201230_142056.webp

It's a horse shoe.
Nails are in it because probably the shoe was thrown, or just replaced.
Very common find at every homestead site.
You could try electrolysis then wax/oil it to stop the corrosion.
Apple cider vinegar removes the rust with a good soaking.
Some even use a small hammer to knock the crust off.
But remember it's a horse shoe, tough things they are.
For age there is a few sites that date shoes.
Just not at the home computer to link it over.

I disagree. an ox has a cloven hoof. the shoes for ox are often mistaken for broken horse shoes because they are what looks like half a shoe. the two sides of an ox hoof move independently and would not wear a solid shoe like a horse. I find a few ox shoes on a wagon path up in the mountains near a rocky stretch of the path where shoes got torn off. I hope this helps, George. Hmmm...I was posting to a line about it being an ox shoe...
oops, sorry Pepperj, I see now that you posted a picture of an ox shoe. My mistake. I agree with you.
