This is my nana's it was her father's he got when he was over seas in India in WW2. i couldn't find anything on it. please help on how old it is and if it is worth anything
Hey Gold Boy, I did a brief search, and could not find an exact match. I believe yours is WWII vintage, and that style was common among the police forces. It's apparently an inspector's cap badge. You can search the phrase, cap badges of India police, or India police inspector cap badges. I found this listed on a British auction site, the age and design are similar, and it was a British forces cap pin from WWII. They valued it at 38 pounds, which is about 50 dollars.
As a side note, the Brits love to swap insignia pins with other country's forces, and that is probably how your GG grandfather got it.
It appears to be a Police Service pin from Madras City (now called Chennai) India. I find other examples on line with E II R (for Elizabeth Regina 2nd or Queen Elizabeth II). I believe she took the throne in 1952.
If the pin is WWII era, I'd expect it to show G R for George Rex (King George 6th)
I can't understand why your pin has E R I. Elizabeth Regina 1st was back in the 1500's.
Perhaps we can get one of the Brits to chime in and set us straight.
As far as value is concerned, it probably has more value to you as a family piece than it would in the collector market.
Lizzie the 1st died right around 1600, I’m not sure the Brits even knew about India yet, they at least didn’t take control until the 1820’s. The language is the giveaway here somehow.
