Hey guys I found a bottle neck like this near a natural spring. The house site around it date from late 1700s-1960s (when it burnt). How old is it? I would put up a pic of the exact one but it's currently misplaced. The one below is the exact same color and look. Is it 1800s? Would the people put water in it from the spring? Thanks

I think mid to late 1800s. I have dug those out of deep mines that were closed in the late 1800s and not opened until i opened them. That top is called a flat applied lip.
I do not know what they were used for but some of mine smelled like kerosene.

Hey Andrew,

The top that you have pictured is an applied lip. It would be middle to later 19th Century, by the look of it. I can't say whether or not people would have used it to take water from the spring, though that is certainly a possibility.

Though I cannot judge the size, it appears to be a prescription finish, or single flared collar.

Counterintuitively, I've found dumps on the banks of fresh water sources many times over the years.
