Did old motels from the 1940s use window weights? How old is this window weight? It has something pointy on the end bottom right. What century age at least. The picture of the motel was tooken in 1942 the motel is now demolished there is nothing there other than the parking lot for the motel and a few bricks. It sure is heavy. 20210111_234305.webpView attachment 189306320210111_234339.webp20210111_234345.webp20210111_234356.webp20210111_234409.webp20210111_234733.webp20210111_234742.webp

Lots of older homes especially in the mid west (Oklahoma and Kansas) had window weights that were installed even in the early 1900s. When I lived in Oklahoma I would detect around the old home sites that were erected after the ''Run'' to establish and claim that property.
At this one property all that was left was the ruins of the house with roof completely caved in with some of the walls still intact. There were still windows (without glass) intact and I decided to check out the window weights. I unscrewed the one screw at the bottom and found what looked like some paper tied with a string around the weight. What I found was a Confederate $100.00 bill and bank Confederate Commerative $1000.00 bill. So, it does pay to check out those window weights.

Your window weight looks very much like the one that had seen.

The window frame has pulleys at the top and a rope went from the window up threw pulley than to the weights. They are a counterbalance to help make window lighter to open. The pulleys squeak and you can hear the weight in the frame kinda bump and bang in the wall.

I helped my son renovate a house built in the 1930's in CT, and all the windows had similar window weights.
