Thanks Gater. Do you know if they rake the beaches every morning? Is it a "family" beach? We were looking at going to Clearwater until I heard out here that it is somewhat of a party beach and therefore a little dirty as well. The primary reason for going is vacationing. But I'd like to do some MD'ing as well. We hear that Fort DeSoto is also nice so we plan on going there for a day as well.

They start rakeing the beach at sun-up, keep it in nice shape. The beachs at Treasure Island are very wide with a lot of room for a lot of people. Ft. Desoto is nice also. You will enjoy it. I will be in T.I. next week and will let you know then.

Re: How is Treasure Island Beach for vacationing and MD'ing

When the beach is accessible to folks staying in condo and hotels I don't feel I find as much as where the folks have to park and take all the beach goodies with them. In the condo and hotels all they have to do in put on a swim suit and hit the beach. On the park and walk to beaches folks seem to take their purse, jewelry and lots of other stuff along with them and it is easier for them to lose stuff in the sand. But I've still found nice stuff on the condo and hotel beaches. Usually the hotels have some picnic tables between the hotel and beach along with more private sandy areas between the hotel and the beach. I've found nice stuff there with the hotel owner's permission of course. Sometimes I've found stuff where a couple might have wandered slightly off the beach to a more secluded area for romance or whatever. I've found a few nice coin and once in awhile jewelry piles there. But you don't want to detect on the dunes or dig around any of the plants like seagrapes and seaoates and such. That is a good way to get yelled at or fined. Good luck with the hunting. Just staying at a Radison on the beach sounds like a good chance to fine a nice piece of jewelry maybe. I've also been know to stoop as low as to detect around the newspaper boxes for dropped change. Got laughed at once till I came up with a couple clad quarters. ...... Don't forget the area tot lots either.

I live in madeira beach, which is about 2 miles from treasure island. All the beaches around this area are pretty good for detecting. But the beaches in treasure island are very wide, unlike in madeira beach. Just get out there first thing in the morning. (and yes they do rake the beaches on treasure island)

As for Fort Desoto, that is a very good place to detect. As a matter of fact we have a spot reserved for july 5th - 8th to camp there. I will be detecting every morning.(can hardly wait)

It has been years since I detected at fort desoto park , but it was required to check in at the rangers station to get a permit(no cost). They would let you know where was off limits. Just a heads up

They told me that only the sandy beach areas were permitted.
