I chose to hunt in the recommended default position where the dials are set to a small "V" on the dials for both depth and discrimination. I also run the detector with an audible threshold, again as suggested in the manual. I hunt in true all metal mode, and when I get a signal, I flick the 3 way switch to motion discriminate to see if the signal has any change, or disappears completely. If it disappears completely, I move on to the next target. If the signal decreases, but is still audible, I dig it anyways. This results in digging up tinfoil or other junk some of the time. If the signal is strong, then I switch to motion discriminate from true all metal mode, and it is usually a coin, button or a large deep target.
Now, I find the easiest way to pinpoint with the Scorpion is off the tip. First I center the coil on a target, then pull the the coil towards me. While it is in true all metal mode, listen to the audio, and where it stops. If it stops abruptly, the target is usually shallow and just at the tip of the coil. If it softens before it disappears, the target will probably be deeper and be closer towards the center on the coil. The new pinpointer Garrett came out with really fast forwards your ability to learn the whereabouts the target is using the Scorpion.
And pay attention to the sounds this machine makes....tinfoil sounds a little different then a copper coin or ring. And....expect to also dig lots of beaver tail pull tabs.
